What is Digi Accelerated Linux (DAL)?

Digi Accelerated Linux (DAL) is Digi’s common Linux-based operating system used across its networking and edge devices.

It provides a unified, feature-rich software platform across Digi routers, gateways, console servers, USB management devices and other hardware families.

DAL combines a hardened Linux distribution with Digi networking, security and device-management services, so that products share the same user experience, configuration model and integration points.

Visit the DAL documentation portal for more information.

Key characteristics

DAL is designed for deployed, long-lived field infrastructure:

  • Common OS across product lines DAL is used across multiple Digi device platforms, reducing the learning curve and making it easier to manage mixed fleets.

  • Linux foundation DAL is built on a standard Linux foundation and is updated regularly to incorporate kernel, security and package updates.

  • Integrated with Digi Remote Manager® (Digi RM) DAL devices integrate with Digi Remote Manager for zero-touch provisioning, configuration management, monitoring, firmware updates and secure remote access from the cloud.

  • Focus on security and resiliency DAL incorporates Digi security best practices (for example, strong authentication, encrypted management access, firewalling and VPN support) along with features such as connectivity monitoring and configuration rollback to help recover from misconfigurations.

Core capabilities

DAL provides a broad set of services needed for wired, wireless and cellular networking:

  • Networking and routing

    • IPv4 and IPv6 routing

    • Static and, on supported platforms, dynamic routing protocols

    • VLANs, QoS and traffic shaping

    • Redundant WAN and failover behavior

  • Security features

    • Stateful firewall with zone-based policies

    • VPN support (for example, IPsec, OpenVPN or WireGuard)

    • Certificate and key management

    • Support for centralized authentication (for example, RADIUS or TACACS+)

  • Cellular and wireless features

    • Optimized cellular configuration for fast network registration

    • Multi-carrier and APN profile handling

    • Health monitoring and connection-recovery features

  • Device and fleet management

    • Web UI, CLI and API/RCI interfaces for configuration

    • Rich telemetry and status reporting to Digi Remote Manager

    • Remote firmware and configuration management, including rollback to a known-good state

  • Edge computing

    • Ability to run custom scripts and applications on the device

    • Programmatic access to interfaces and metrics for local automation and integration

DAL on XBee Hive gateways

The XBee Hive for Wi-SUN and other XBee Hive gateways use DAL as their underlying operating system. DAL provides:

  • The Linux environment and base networking stack

  • Management interfaces (Web UI, CLI and Digi Remote Manager integration)

  • Security services such as firewall, VPN and user authentication

  • System services used by the XBee radio stack and routing functions

On the XBee Hive for Wi-SUN, the Wi-SUN FAN functionality (border router role, mesh configuration, channel plan and PHY settings) runs on top of DAL and leverages its networking, security and management capabilities.
