Once your XBee Hive for Wi-SUN border routers and XBee for Wi-SUN nodes are registered in Remote Manager, you can manage them remotely without physical access. This topic describes the device management operations available from the cloud and links to the Remote Manager documentation for detailed instructions.

XBee Hive for Wi-SUN border routers and XBee for Wi-SUN nodes can be accessed either from the Devices view in Remote Manager, or from the Devices tab of a network page if the border router belongs to that registered network.

Configure devices

Remote Manager lets you view and edit configuration settings for any registered XBee Hive for Wi-SUN border router or XBee for Wi-SUN node without physical access to the device or the local network. Configuration is presented as a tree of setting controls grouped by category, such as Authentication, Network, or System.

Digi recommends managing device configuration through Templates rather than editing devices directly. If a device is controlled by a Template, direct edits may be overwritten the next time the Template is applied.

See the Remote Manager documentation for configuration instructions.

Manage configuration with Templates

A Template is a reusable blueprint that defines a complete device configuration, including settings, files, containers, and firmware versions. Associate a Template with a device group, and every device in that group automatically stays aligned with the Template definition.

Templates also support per-device overrides through a CSV file, giving you fleet-wide consistency with the flexibility to handle exceptions. When you need to change a setting across dozens or hundreds of devices, update the Template once and Remote Manager propagates the change to the entire group.

See the Remote Manager documentation for Templates instructions.

Update firmware

Remote Manager lets you push firmware updates to XBee Hive for Wi-SUN border routers and XBee for Wi-SUN nodes over the air, without physical access to the devices. You can update from the built-in firmware repository or upload a specific file, which is useful for staged rollouts, pre-release testing, or rolling back to an earlier version.

Firmware updates run as background jobs tracked on the Activity page, showing the update status and results per device. You can also include firmware versions in a Template to ensure all devices in a group always run the correct version automatically.

See the Remote Manager documentation for firmware update instructions.

Run automations

Automations are multi-step workflows that run on a schedule, triggered by a device event, or as part of a Template application. Each automation can chain actions such as running CLI commands, deploying files, applying configuration changes, updating firmware, and rebooting devices, with conditional logic between steps.

Automations are a flexible way to perform complex maintenance operations across your border router fleet without visiting a site.

See the Remote Manager documentation for Automations instructions.

Reboot a device

Remote Manager lets you remotely reboot any registered XBee Hive for Wi-SUN or XBee for Wi-SUN device without physical access. Remote reboots are useful after a configuration change that requires a restart, or when a device is unresponsive.

When you reboot an XBee Hive for Wi-SUN border router, it disconnects from Remote Manager and from its connected XBee for Wi-SUN nodes temporarily. The nodes re-join the network automatically once the border router comes back online.

See the Remote Manager documentation for reboot instructions.

Manage the file system remotely

Remote Manager lets you upload, list, and delete files on a registered XBee Hive for Wi-SUN directly from the cloud, without connecting to the device locally. This is useful for deploying configuration files, pushing scripts, or retrieving diagnostic data from the field.

Remote file system management is available for XBee Hive for Wi-SUN border routers only. It is not supported on XBee for Wi-SUN nodes.

See the Remote Manager documentation for file system management instructions.

Run remote CLI commands

Remote Manager lets you run CLI commands on a registered XBee Hive for Wi-SUN directly from the cloud, without a terminal connection. This is useful for running diagnostic commands, checking device state, or executing management operations that are not exposed through the configuration interface.

Remote CLI is available for XBee Hive for Wi-SUN border routers only. It is not supported on XBee for Wi-SUN nodes.

See the Remote Manager documentation for remote CLI instructions.
