Update the OpenVPN configuration

You can change the OpenVPN configuration for a user if needed.

If you change the configuration, you must delete any existing OpenVPN user profiles for that user and then import them again. This ensures that the configuration change you make in Digi Axess is applied to the user's OpenVPN user profile.

The OpenVPN user profiles are created using your Digi Axess user name and password. A user profile for the same user can be created on multiple installations of OpenVPN on different computers and mobile devices.

Step 1: Change the OpenVPN configuration in Digi Axess

  1. Access the Digi Axess Admin page. You must have Admin or Device User privileges to access this page. However, only users with Admin privileges can access the User Management section.

  2. From the User Management section in the Admin dashboard, click Users, or click Add next to Users.

    As an alternative, you can click Users from the dashboard pane on the left of the screen.

  3. Find the user profile that you want to update. You can scroll through the list of user profiles or use the Search fields to search for a profile.

  4. Click on the user profile name. The Users screen displays.

  5. Click the OpenVPN tab.

  6. Select a client configuration option from the OpenVPN Client list box. The selected configuration is applied when the user sets up a user profile on the OpenVPN Connect Client.

    • Recommended: This is the standard option, and it is selected by default. Digi Axess recommends that you use this option.

    • Allow Credential Caching: Choose this option only if you need to improve connection stability. This option removes the --auth-nocache feature from the configuration.

      CAUTION! While this option can be used to improve connection stability, there are security risks to take into account. Refer to the OpenVPN reference manual for details.

  7. Click Save to save the change.

Step 2: Delete and re-add OpenVPN user profiles

To ensure that the any changes are applied, you must delete all of your OpenVPN user profiles, and then re-add them. Remember that a user profile for the same user can be created for OpenVPN installed on different computers and mobile devices.

Before you begin

Determine the computers and mobile devices that have OpenVPN installed and for which you have created a user profiles.

To delete and re-add OpenVPN user profiles

Repeat this process for each instance of OpenVPN for which you have created a user profile.

  1. Access a computer or mobile device that has an instance of OpenVPN for which you have created a user profile.

  2. Open the OpenVPN Connect client.

  3. Delete your user profile from the OpenVPN Connect client.

  4. Add your user profile to the OpenVPN Connect client.
